Fungal Toenail InfectionsHave you noticed a change in the appearance of your toenails? Fungal nail infections can cause yours nails to become thick and discoloured. At Perform Podiatry we provide solutions for nail infections.
FUNGAL TOENAIL INFECTIONS
Fungal toenail infections known as onychomycosis affect about 10% of the population. The fungus that is typically responsible for causing a fungal nail infection is known as a dermatophyte. Yeasts and moulds may also be responsible for causing fungal nail infections. There are many risk factors that increase the chance a fungal nail infection from developing:
- Excessive foot perspiration
- Skin fungal infections, athletes foot (Tinea Pedis)
- Living in hot humid environments
- Damage to the nail plate exposing the nail bed
- Wearing wet and damp footwear
- Poor circulation
- Compromised immune systems
SYMPTOMS OF FUNGAL TOENAIL INFECTIONS
- Yellow discolouration of the nail plate
- Patches of white chalky discolouration on the top of the nail plate
- Thickening of the nails
- Brittle crumbling of the nails
TREATMENT FOR FUNGAL TOENAIL INFECTIONS
Fungus likes to grow in warm, dark and damp environments. Addressing these factors is an important part of treating and preventing fungal toenail infections from reoccurring. Medication is also required to effectively treat fungal toenail infections and may either be a topical solution that is applied to the effected nails or an oral tablet.
