Shin pain is often referred to as shin splints. This is an umbrella term that encompasses many different conditions that can occur at the front of the shin or the lower inside portion of the shinbone (the tibia). All of these conditions can be successfully managed and treated by a Podiatrist.

CAUSES OF SHIN PAIN & SHIN SPLINTS

Pain on the front outer side of the shin could be caused by:

  • Tibialis anterior overuse, tendinitis/tendinopathy
  • Compartment syndrome

Pain along the lower inside of the shinbone may be caused by:

  • Tight muscles and fascia
  • Stress fractures/micro fractures (these often occur in runners due to repetitive overloading of the shinbone)
Running without shin splints or shin pain
Exercising without shin splints or shin pain

SYMPTOMS OF SHIN PAIN & SHIN SPLINTS

  •  Tightness and soreness along the front of the shin
  • Pain when running along the inside edge of the lower shin
  • A deep bone aching or bruised feeling along the length of the shinbone

TREATMENT OF SHIN PAIN & SHIN SPLINTS

  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Footwear advice
  • Gait re-training for runners
  • Manual therapies such as massage and dry needling to help treat sore and tight muscles
  • Foot mobilisation techniques to help restore normal joint range of motion to restricted and tight joints within the foot and ankle
  • Anti-inflammatory medication if appropriate
  • Strapping tape to support the foot arch and to reduce excessive loading of the muscles causing shin pain
  • Orthotic therapy (insole or arch supports) to reduce excessive loading of the muscles causing shin pain
